The Controversial Dress Code at Work A Love-Hate Dilemma
The Controversial Dress Code at Work â" A Love-Hate Dilemma The controversial dress code at work A love-hate dilemma Poor Newsweek. Theyâve just been snared in the trap that makes most companies nervous. Newsweek employees just leaked a new internal dress code manual and the press is having a field day. We could replace âNewsweekâ with virtually any company name but hereâs the gist of the new policy: âDenim jeans, sweat suits, low-rise pants, sneakers, sandals, flip-flops, halter tops, camisoles, baseball caps, sweat suits, t-shirts, tank tops, micro mini-skirts, shorts, or anything else that is deemed unprofessional or excessively distracting are inappropriate business attire and should not be worn to work.â On social media platforms comments on the leak range from ââ¦adults working in a professional environment should dress professionallyâ to âI think dress codes for adults are just stupidâ¦â There is no dress code that will make everybody happy but they are important. Letâs take a closer look. #1 The intent is positive. You, as an employee, may feel that a dress code is restricting. I have heard, âMy company says they are open to diversity yet they want us all to dress alike.â Actually, your company IS open to diversity so they want to avoid anybody or anything from offending someone else. It is not only things we say can that can be offensive; so can the things we wear. We work for globally diverse companies and many things can be offensive to various cultures. For example, some people donât want to see undergarments of any kind, cleavage, often-unkempt toes, etc. As for casual attire (sweatpants, baseball caps), wear those at night and on weekends all you want. Work is called work for a reason. It is the place that compensates us to work in THEIR environment, abiding by their values, rules, policies, and helping them build THEIR brand. If certain elements of your companyâs brand are the color of the paint on the walls and how people dress, that is their decision. You may elect to not work there if the requirements are not comfortable for you. #2 Dress code challenges are NOT gender or generation-specific. As a manager, I have had to have dress code conversations with men and women baby boomers (born 1946-1964), Gen X-ers (born 1965-1976) and Millennials (born 1977-1992). Within each generation there is a wide continuum of conservative to liberal attitudes and as many interpretations of the type of dress that is appropriate enough or professional enough. Iâm sure there are some senior executives who are equally challenged with the new dress code. #3 More clothing choices are appropriate and professional than are inappropriate and unprofessional. There is a very wide range of clothes that are acceptable, while still letting individuals express their creativity and uniqueness. Just look around you. There are colors, fabrics, combinations, styles, and accessories that bring out a sense of individuality while still providing appropriate dress for work. A wardrobe can be low-cost, second-hand, or vintage and still be very acceptable. #4 Your attire doesnt make you less cool, less creative, less important, or less interesting, anyway. First impressions are truly lasting, so why be labeled before you even show your talents? Like those required at some grade schools and highschools, I often wish we wore a uniform at work so we would be judged (and compensated!) on how we meet or, better, exceed, our job requirements. Period. In todayâs new era of work, I believe the number one career word âchoices.â We are all empowered to make choices, that is, when we have choices. You can choose to work for a technology start-up that says, âWear whatever you want.â Or you can work for a company with a brand that requires a certain level of dress standard. Or you can start your own business and wear whatever you want! What is your opinion? We want to hear it! We look forward to your comments!

Laid Off vs Fired and Other Work Termination Definitions
Laid Off versus Fired and Other Work Termination Definitions I have news for you. Youve been ended. So have I, and a few occurrences have been simpler than others. Any individual who has left an occupation has had their work at that association ended. That is it, the end, ruined. It is anything but a positive or negative thing, simply a question of actuality. It very well may be confounding, nonetheless, to sift through the sorts of terminations, what they mean and how to discuss them in prospective employee meetings and beyond.Terminations ordinarily can be categorized as one of three classes: renunciation, cutback or terminating. Renunciations are viewed as a willful end while cutbacks and firings are automatic. The distinctions may affect your work history when references are accomplished for your next activity, qualification for joblessness and informing while examining your departure.ResignationThe most normal type of end is the point at which somebody leaves, or leaves, a place of employment. The terms leave and quit are compatible with leave sounding more formal. This end type implies that you have elected to leave a job paying little mind to the explanation. Regularly a letter of abdication is submitted and a notification time of about fourteen days or more is given. The individuals who have surrendered are not commonly qualified for joblessness benefits nor do they get a severance package.LayoffA cutback normally happens when there isn't sufficient work to legitimize a position. In the event that somebody specifies that they have been made excess, scaled down, given a formal notice, or experienced a rebuild, these terms are equal with a cutback. This kind of end may happen to an individual or to a gathering. A cutback happens if an organization closes, changes the manner in which work is done or conveyed, or encounters lost funds.Sometimes, a worker is offered alternatives that incorporate a cutback. For instance, if an organization is moving to an alternate express, the representative might be offered the chanc e to migrate or be laid off. Additionally, if a position is being wiped out, the representative might be offered another job in the organization, or a cutback. Regardless of whether a representative picks the cutback, it is as yet automatic since they didn't decide to leave their job in its settled upon state. Cutbacks are because of an organization change and are not a reflection on a workers execution. Cutbacks might possibly have a notification period. The individuals who are laid off commonly get a severance bundle and are qualified for joblessness benefits.FiringIf somebody is terminated, they have not met the necessities of their activity. This could be because of poor work item, mentality or fit with the organization culture. In contrast to a cutback, being terminated is an immediate impression of the representatives execution. The qualification for a warning period relies to a great extent upon the seriousness of the explanation behind which somebody is terminated. Most occa sions, somebody who is terminated gets a severance bundle and isn't qualified for joblessness benefits.Talking About Your TerminationWhen you talk about leaving an occupation, under any circumstances, the principle objective is to keep the discussion positive and intended for your next circumstance. A similar recipe can be applied to each of the three end types with a couple of minor alterations. When discussing why youve left an occupation, start with the positive and offer what you delighted in about or learned in the job. Next, talk about the change that happened which provoked your takeoff. At long last, share what youre searching for in your next job. Abstain from harping on the negative in each case. With a cutback, you might need to pressure the organization change to make the point understood that the end wasnt a reflection on your exhibition. On the off chance that you were terminated, and decide to share this data in a meeting, address the explanation and the exercises you learned because of the end. Missteps occur, however youll uncover a lot by they way you dealt with the circumstance. Closure your story by discussing your best course of action will assist with moving the discussion away from the incident. You may see countless qualifiers like commonly and in many cases in this article. Heres the thing when somebody leaves an organization, it may be confounded. Somebody might be emphatically urged to leave, requested to be laid off, or got a cutback as opposed to being terminated as a signal of generosity to help with future work. Whats significant is that you and your previous organization speak to a unified and steady message regarding why youve left so you dont have any issues when your next business enquires. No matter your purpose behind leaving an organization, you are in charge of your following stages. Set aside some effort to think about the exercises youve learned with this change and afterward get out there and rock your next position. Your next business will be fortunate to have you.- - Alyson Garrido ispassionateabout helping ladies advance their professions and findjobs they will appreciate. Jobseekers Still Do These 3 ThingsWhich Dont Work
Jobseekers Still Do These 3 Things⦠Which Dont Work Jobseekers Still Do These 3 Things⦠Which Dont Work It sure would be decent if quest for new employment was what it used to be: you'd draw up your resume, disseminate it to some all around put contacts, and system your way into a decent job. At that point you'd do it once more. At that point you'd do it once more. Following that example can keep you cheerfully utilized for a considerable length of time. Be that as it may, the day old fashioned quest for new employment strategies quit working can bring genuine miracle and disappointment. Along these lines, how about we cast away the old things, and supplant them with quest for new employment 2.0 methodologies that get you the reaction you need. The #1 thing that doesn't work: buzzword watchwords. Its absolutely impossible that you being a conscientious cooperative person is the most grounded resource you bring to the table. At the point when I see resumes and LinkedIn profiles that start off on that off-base foot, I trust it's a spread for dread. There's dread on the grounds that those are the words you find in each advertisement, so without a doubt you should incorporate them, isn't that so? There's dread since you don't have a clue what else to compose. There's dread since you don't have a clue how to state who you really are, what you really do, or what the one of a kind worth is that you bring to the table. Rather than stuffing your introduction with supposed catchphrases from the base of the advertisements, (I oppose you to show me a promotion requesting a meticulous cooperative person in the first line), start with what the advertisement says from the top. These are the first not many lines from a promotion for a Sales Director: The essential occupation capacity of the Community Sales Director is to drive new deals into the network. Competitors with demonstrated capacity to close will be thought of. Both inside and outside deals endeavors are required to draw in new inhabitants to the network. Desires center around lead improvement/shutting and solid effort experience for referral advancement to nearby experts. Here are the watchwords and expressions you have to underscore to be seen as a counterpart for this activity. These are in the request introduced in the advertisement: Sales Leadership (the promotion doesn't explicitly say this, be that as it may, at a Director level, the center of what you would do is giving deals initiative), Sales Closing, Inside and Outside Sales, Lead Development, and Referral Development. None of those words is buzzword. Those words are explicit. The #2 thing that doesn't work: depending on work board cautions. I get it: it's anything but difficult to go into the activity loads up 1 time, enter your ideal occupation titles, location(s), and such, and have the activity loads up consequently send you (purportedly) coordinating open doors all the time. Nonetheless, there are several issues with this outdated strategy. Consistently jobseekers disclose to me the alarms don't coordinate what they entered, in regards to work, work level, or area. The second issue that prompts is email mess. You're investing such a great amount of time in work alarms each day, disappointed that your pursuit of employment methodology on-autopilot isn't working, that you're not giving vitality where you will get the most grounded outcomes. Disregard all the computerization. Supplant that with classic, human exertion. Recognize the spots where you need to work, look into the associations, pinpoint the individuals conceivably applicable to your pursuit of employment, and make your methodology. While that appears as though it requires some investment, well, you're sitting around idly on programmed work alarms in any case⦠The #3 thing that doesn't work: accepting that once you make it to the meeting, you can take things from that point. Alright, however how are you anticipating getting to the meeting in the first spot? You're so bustling thinking something about the future that you're not successfully dealing with what you have to in the present. LinkedIn IS your meeting. At the point when individuals get your resume, before they get the telephone, they find you on LinkedIn. What they find there decides if they get the telephone by any stretch of the imagination. Treat LinkedIn as the motor driving your pursuit of employment. It's anything but a medium planned for you to just stop there. It is a medium expected for important individuals to discover you. Focus on being seen by effectively interfacing with pertinent individuals in the associations you're focusing on. Follow these pertinent individuals and remark on their news source posts in an ordinary person manner of speaking. In the event that you need to make it to the meeting, show your genuine abilities, show your genuine mankind, and give some drive.

Graduate Fair June 10th 11th June How relevant is this fair for International students University of Manchester Careers Blog
Graduate Fair June 10th 11th June â" How relevant is this fair for International students The Graduate Fair will take place on 10th 11th June at The Armitage Centre in Fallowfield, Manchester. They are popular with international students who are looking for jobs in the UK after graduation and who have not yet secured a graduate scheme place, but how relevant are these fairs for international students? With over 150 employers and recruiters over two days offering a variety of positions, there really is something for everyone. You will also have the opportunity to find out about postgraduate courses and further study options. The fair is a way to find out about graduate jobs and employers across Manchester and the UK. However, not all firms at the fair will be able or willing to hire international students for their positions. This blog post explores some key messages, if you are heading to the fair and ways to prepare: Who will be hiring international students? It is difficult to predict which firms will be willing to sponsor international students for Tier 2 visas, but here are some insights which may help you to plan ahead. 1) Typically, only firms who are on the UKâs Sponsor Register are currently in a position to sponsor graduates for working visas. (There is an alternative for those not on the sponsor register Tier 5 read on to learn more about Tier 5.) There is a list of the exhibitors here that are NOT on the Sponsor register. Firms not on the Sponsor Register Firms can still apply to join the register, and some firms did attempt this last year, following the fair, but it can take time and money to do this. For many firms, that do not struggle to fill vacancies, there is no incentive to do this. Some firms also have nationality requirements for their roles. However, if you have a strong CV and a professional approach, some firms may spot the opportunity, particularly IT or engineering firms or firms needing language skills. http://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/events/graduaterecruitmentfair/makingthemostofthefair/ Whatâs the alternative? Tier 5! If the minimum salary is not high enough and you are a PhD then you can extend your visa alternatively you could look at a Tier 5 visa â" which is a fixed term visa to enable you to gain work experience in the UK for up to 12 months. You will need to get the internship offer first, and also to pay a fee to the visa sponsor such as BUNAC, AIESEC, GTI ISIS(Chinese students only), the employers or the University of Manchester do not sponsor Tier 5 visas. As there are no minimum salaries and it can be with any employer, there is more flexibility, but you do need to leave the UK after your experience so it is not really a way to move to Tier 2 sponsorship. Find out more about Tier 5 at: http://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/international/ukworkafterstudy/tier5/ 2) For those firms who are on the Register, and can sponsor, the next consideration is the salary for the position. There are minimum salaries in place for employers looking to sponsor. The absolute minimum is £20,800 per year, but some career areas will have a higher minimum than this. You can find the list of minimum salaries under the Codes of Practice on the UK Visas website, and this UKCISA information is useful. www.gov.uk/government/collections/sponsorship-information-for-employers-and-educators#codes-of-practice www.ukcisa.org.uk/International-Students/The-next-stage/Working-after-your-studies/Employment-Tier-2/Eligible-jobs-including-wage-levels/ http://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/international/ukworkafterstudy/tier2visa/ 3) So if the firm is on the register and the salary is high enough, will that be okay? Well, it could be, but it may not! Some recruiters are not familiar with the latest visa regulations for recent graduates so it can be helpful if you follow the latest legislation yourself as you may find it appropriate to help a recruiter with the latest regulations. For example, some changes that recruiters may not be aware of are that: â" if you apply for Tier 2 sponsorship before your Tier 4 visa expires, then there is no longer a labour market test required (where the firm has to show that they could not find a UK / EEA worker for the role). â" if you are moving from a valid Tier 4 visa to a Tier 2 visa the sponsorship does not fall into the monthly quotas for the UK, so certificates are not restricted for Tier 2 visa sponsorship. Employers can ask for more. You can stay up to date with the most up to date information through links on our website: www.manchester.ac.uk/careers/international and watch the UK Visa Master-class Webinar http://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/international/events/ (Donât rely on us, we are not immigration experts in Careers, just trying to help you find your way through the regulations!) What about the other firms? Many firms at the fair are smaller organisations, who may not have a history of hiring international talent. If you show a real interest in their firm, what they do, demonstrate your own passion for the role and ensure you come across well â" who knows. If your first question is âdo you hire international students?â , âhow much do you pay?â or you find yourself shouting âbut you have to hire me, just get on the Sponsor Register!â ⦠probably not! Professionalism is crucial â" itâs the one quality they can definitely observe when at the fair. Perhaps think about the unique skills that you could offer that organisation (language skills/expertise) and communicate that. How do I prepare effectively? There are some useful documents/sites that you should read in advance of the fair. The most essential is the Exhibitors Day 1 and Exhibitors Day 2 links for each of the days of the fair. This will tell you about each of the organisations attending and their vacancies with a link to their website. This can be an excellent way to ensure that you come across informed and motivated by specific companies. http://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/events/graduaterecruitmentfair/ One complaint that I have heard many times from exhibitors at fairs is that students do not have an idea of their own career strengths and motivations. If you hear yourself saying âI am a finance student at MBS, what have you got for me? or âI am studying business information systems, what do you think I could do?â⦠then you may as well spend your time having a cup of tea at the kiosk. Employers want to hear something more akin to: âI am a finance student at the Business School and I am keen to explore opportunities in xxxxxx, I was really interested to read about your xxxx programme on your website, could you please tell me a little more about it?â⦠Tips on the day for international students We have also put together a handy summary sheet for international students who are attending the fair. It provides a summary of firms who are not on the Sponsor and also a summary of key visa legislation and sources of information. http://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/events/graduaterecruitmentfair/makingthemostofthefair/ If you are not up to date on regulations, this will help you. The attached sheet was produced in good faith, but please check out firms on the UK Visas website yourself, or ask the firms directly to ensure you have the most up to date information. Getting help On the day there is an immigration solicitor available at the fair to offer free one to one short sessions. There are so many different aspects to immigration (Ancestry/ EEA rights) that it can be useful to explore your own situation. In addition the International Career Consultant will be at the fair on both days with the Immigration expert for career related queries. My only tip for job hunting would be to make sure that you have a focused approach when youre looking for a job rather than having a scattered CV approach. I would also recommend that you always keep your options open on location and countries you would like to work in and always have a backup plan if things donât work out. Getting a job back home in your country can also be a good option for you and you should plan ahead for that just in case things donât work out in the UK. Omer Zakaria, Msc International Human Resource Management, 2012. Recruitment Consultant, Robert Walters Plc, Dubai. Considering shorter term UK experiences or applying for graduate positions back in your home country is encouraged to provide a back-up plan. Our pages on International job hunting, international visas and our country pages are all useful sources on the Careers Service website. www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/international/ Our international networks can also provide you a way to connect back into international job markets or explore new ones.
